Flip Mino Video Camera – Black, 2 GB,1 Hour OLD MODEL Review

Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R2L8OMPMDIC5QK

I am posting a series of reviews to help people decide between these very similar flash memory camcorders. I was curious if the new Flip Video Mino Series Camcorder (Black) was better than the Creative Labs Vado Pocket Video Camcorder (Silver) or the Flip Video Ultra Series Camcorder (Black). I surprised myself after testing all three as well as a few competing devices.

The quality of video and audio captured with the Flip Mino is noticeably better than the Creative Vado, even when it’s at its highest setting. However, for most users, the Creative Vado will probably meet your expectations at a much better price than the Flip Mino. The Mino’s recent price drop makes the decision slightly harder, but there’s still enough of a price difference to make the Vado attractive. While the Flip Ultra offers nice quality and removable batteries, the Vado offers a user changeable battery in a more slender body.

So the ranking in terms of quality goes Flip Mino, Creative Vado and Flip Ultra. But the ranking in terms of value goes Creative Vado, Flip Ultra and then the Flip Mino.

The unit you choose will depend on what your needs are, how much quality matters to you and how much you want to spend. Between these three most popular entry level models, the answer for some people may be, “none of the above.”

Pros

+ Video quality is ok on the Vado, good on the Ultra and much better on the Mino – Advantage, Mino

+ Both include ports for AV out connections to TVs, but the Mino comes with the cable and the Vado does not – Advantage, Mino

+ The microphone sensitivity is below average on the Vado and slightly better on the Mino – Advantage, Mino

+ Both have a screw hole for attaching a tri-pod or similar stand, but the Mino’s is centered and the Vado’s is off-center (on the lower right) – Advantage, Mino

+ The Mino has a slick USB connector that tucks into the body and is released via a tab, while the USB dongle on the Vado is flexible but has a tab that sticks out from the body – Advantage, Mino

+ In terms of looks, the Vado’s body is thinner and wider, and the Mino is slightly thicker but not as wide; the Mino definitely looks slicker, though the black plastic will attract finger-prints; Also, the Vado comes in different colors – Advantage, Mino

+ The built in speaker on the Vado is not nearly as good as the dual speakers on the Mino – Advantage Mino

+ The low light performance is subpar on all three units but slightly better on the Mino – Advantage, Mino

+ Ability to zoom seems weak on both, though the Mino does perform slightly better – Advantage, Mino

+ The Mino comes with a cheap pouch and a dongle, while the Vado comes with no carrying case or dongle included – Advantage, Mino

+ The Mino is presented in a box that is reminiscent of the packaging of Zunes and iPods, while the Vado packaging definitely seems cheap – Advantage, Mino

+ The Vado’s on screen menus are definitely not as nice, and the Vado Central software is not nearly as good as the Flip Video Muvee software – Advantage, Mino

+ Nice indicator shows when either unit is capturing video – Draw

+ While the price is still higher for the Mino (see my first con below) the recent price drop is definitely a *pro* for anybody who wanted the mino more anyway

Cons

- The Price on the Vado is much better (just under $90, depending on color) while the Mino sells for much more (listed for $180, sells for about $150)

- While the Ultra worked with removable batteries and the Mino has a built-in rechargeable battery, the Creative Vado has a rechargeable battery that is user changeable and can be easily swapped for extended recording; So if the Mino’s battery fails, replacing it will be much harder than just buying another one for the Vado – BIG Advantage, Vado

- The Flip Mino controls are touch sensitive (except for the record button); The buttons on the Vado are real tactile buttons that have nice feedback – This is a matter of preference, and both are nice, but I prefer the real buttons on the Vado; The Mino seems to have a lag when pressing the controls – Advantage, Vado

- The included software is self-contained on both units and seems to work fine, but the Mino requires much more software to be installed – Advantage, Vado

- Users who want to use a dedicated microphone are provided no jack on these devices for that purpose – Draw

- Neither unit has a headphone jack for checking audio playback on recorded videos – Draw, but the weaker speaker on the Vado makes this hurt the Vado more – Slight Advantage, Mino

- The Mino’s screen is slightly smaller than the Vado’s – Advantage, Vado

- The Mino only records in high quality mode for 1 hour, while the Vado gives you the option of recording in SP for 2 hours – Advantage, Vado

- The Mino and Vado both have some software issues that will hopefully be fixed with updates – the Mino’s software is still slightly better – Advantage, Mino

- The Vado requires you to install the XVid codec to use the built-in software – Not a huge deal, Draw

- Not as much support for Mac users in terms of software

- Both the Vado and the Mino are easily recharged by USB connection, but the Vado includes an option for quick-charging – Advantage, Vado

- Neither of these has slots for any kind of memory card – Draw

- Neither of these will compete with some of the high-definition flash memory camcorders that are on the market, such as the Sanyo Xacti – Draw

Conclusion

While both of these units are ok, I am in the higher demanding category of users who is only going to be satisfied with the features offered by HI-Def flash camcorders like the Sanyo Xacti. Namely, I want to be able to use SD and SDHC memory cards to increase my capacity and record more than just 1 or 2 hours. I would also like to be able to have a more powerful optical zoom and more jacks for accessories. The high price of those units make them prohibitive for now, though the CG9 models are in the ballpark at around $250. Hopefully the price will come down, or competing units will come out to combine the best of both.

But if I have to draw a conclusion, as of now I would say that the Mino is definitely better in terms of quality. With the recent price drop to around $145, it is almost as good of a value when you consider it includes the AV cable, pouch and lanyard that the Vado doesn’t. That’s still not enough extras to justify the %40 price difference, but it definitely shrinks the gap.

So is the Mino good enough to warrant the higher price than the Vado? Many people will still choose the Vado. The fact that they made it easy to buy additional or replacement batteries and swap them out yourself is a HUGE plus. And since this is still a point and click camcorder, saving a nice chunk of change doesn’t hurt either.

While all three are good devices for what they do, I am still searching for my perfect digital camcorder to come out at the right price.

Enjoy!

*****

Note: This video sample was taken with the Flip Mino. I filmed this from the upper deck of Yankee Stadium during a night game, which were much more difficult conditions than the sample I took for the Creative Vado. Still, even under these tough conditions, the video and audio quality of the Flip Mino is noticeably better.

Conversely, the Vado sample video I took was recorded in my friends living room less than 8 feet away from the TV. Even after turning up the volume very high the microphone on the Vado still captured audio very faintly. In addition, the video is set to HQ yet is somewhat grainy compared to the Flip Mino. Check out my review of the Vado to see the sample for yourself.

I will eventually update these reviews with more pictures and improved samples.

Canon VIXIA HF R100 Dual Flash Memory Camcorder – 2010 MODEL

Since purchasing and using the Canon Vixia HF R100 (search c925-1520) for a month since 4/8/2010, my opinion has moved from doubtful skeptic to delighted enthusiast.

I am a non-professional user who has occasionally used several video machines(beta, vhs, 8mm, mini-DV, Hard Disk, DVD, and now HD to SD chip) to capture life events (gatherings, celebrations, outings, sports events, documentary of people, animals, plants, stage plays, and travel). Except for cell snapshots, The HFR100 is now my ONE camera for both video & stills.

Initially, the factory setting for video disappointed. Once the Camera was configured to HD CINE 24 frame mode, the results became much more clear, vivid, detailed & acceptable. While slow panning The DIGIC DV III processor and 2.39 megapixel HD CMOS process images fast enough to create clear individual frames without the choppiness that earlier, slower HD cams had (shots from a moving car with the Vixia actually produced some usable frames and clips).

The 20x(40-800 mm 35mm eq.), glass, canon-quality lens is not threaded to accept threaded filters or wide/tele extensions, but is recessed about 1 cm behind the camera face so it is both protected and somewhat hooded from surrounding light sources. An automatic, drop-down into the cam, lens protector operates when the cam is switched on/off. This is a great feature for protecting the lens while being quick ready. The dynamic image stabilization worked well out to 20X and was amazingly steady for videoing while walking at wide angle settings. The digital zoom (oversampling feature beyond 20X) may be set to 80X or 400X and in this camera may be good enough to produce some useful images in these ranges.

The Instant autofocus was superb. Focus was always very close to being on or slightly deep into the field. There was no “dancing-focus” or movements toward the wrong end of the focusing scale whatsoever. The manual focus automatically magnified in the LCD panel, aiding focus. The high quality LCD panel was very sharp. Its readability in direct sunlight was enhanced with the backlight turned on.

The automatic face detection autofocus did a fantastic job of keeping the focal plane on faces even in a sports action environment. This also worked somewhat to keep wildflower blossoms in focus. Menus and controls are fairly intuitive, but the disk based (also available for download feom the canon web site) .pdf instruction manual should be read to access all of the feature-rich options this unit offers.

I normally carry the camera out and off. This camera starts, focuses, rapid zooms and readies itself very quickly (about 3 sec) so it is hard to miss a shot. Additionally the new, pre-record feature carries 3 sec of video to add in front of your clips to make it difficult to miss shots as long as the camera is on and pointed in the right direction.

The Smart AUTO setting works very well for point-and-shoot capture in most any condition. For difficult environments there are 10 manual modes that can produce great results in extreme conditions. I was disappointed with the low-light results in auto mode, but in the low light mode I was astounded to see what crisp COLOR images could be made in with such little light. An on-camera light is not present nor needed with this camera unless substantial low-light action shots are desired. Campfire light, flashlight, or moonlight are plenty adequate light sources. Starlight is usable with a bipod and no panning.

The stereo sound is bright, adjustable and very accurate. The wind dampening filter was minimal – not adequate. I have been experimenting with sponge materials to attach over the mics. The camera records a low decibel irregular low sound (something like a 16mm film sprocket). It is noticeable when played back at high volumes, and might be objectionable if listening closely for something near the same bandwidth in a low noise recording. I found it tolerable, but I’m hoping this will be corrected in later production.

The battery lasted about two hours. By keeping the camera off, I was able to get through a full day of taking portraits and snapshots on one battery. The day I accidentally left the camera on, I had a failure, but was able to charge it quickly and adequately with a car inverter. A back-up battery would be a wise precaution. On about 38 hrs of experimentation, camera set at highest resolutions, and including several hrs. of picking “snapshots” off of 220 video clips. I have 690 HD stills and have used 6.16G of a Patriot class6 16.1G SD chip. There are plenty of connectors (mini USB (use the included cable with this camera), mini HDMI (no cable included), component out (cable included), power in (115V adapter included)(battery is small(15x32x45mm) and recharged in the camera, a switchable 1/8?(3.5mm) pin headphone/ a/v out jack ((1/8 to (3) RCA) cable is included), and an external mic port. There is no hotshoe.

Advances- on an Alaskan Cruise a few years ago I quit using a still camera, because the high zoom of the Video Cam got us close to the action. The snapshots we could pull were tolerable for computer viewing, but inadequate for blow-ups. While watching glaciers “calve”, after the “crack”, the challenge was to get the vid cam on and focused in the exact right direction before the ice sloughed into the sea. The canon Vixia HF R100 would have been up to the task. It’s fast to start and the resulting images are HD quality.

USAGE- I set the camera for highest resolution, power saver, and keep it off until shooting. This camera will easily fit in a pocket or purse. I normally keep attached a 1 5/8 lb. 10?- 54? collapsible tripod. This added weight stabilizes the light (12 oz. with battery & chip) cam and improves results. The collapsible nature of the tripod with one, two, or three legs variously extended, greatly enhanced results.

At full zoom I found it difficult, even with the tripod, to take a still directly without shaking the camera. I find it much more effective to pull an image during playback while hooked to a monitor, using the snapshot feature. Playback speeds are 1/8 or 1/4 (a remote control is not available with this canon series), so it takes a little effort to find the best frame, but I find the result far more satisfying than trying to catch the perfect still.

Not everyone has the “photographer’s eye” or the ability to catch the perfect frame of an event with a still, but most can select the best frame out of a video clip. Pixels are: 1,040,000 optical zoom dynamic image stabilization, 1,560,000 image stabilization off, 1,560,000 16:9 still, 1,730,000 4:3 still. While not exactly professionally acceptable, the 1 meg images will be acceptable for most casual user uses. Few video cams, costing much more, can offer better resolution off of a video clip than the HFR100.

What I like most about this camera is that it is small- very easy to carry every day. It is fast to prepare itself to shoot very good video. The third and most important thing is that the resulting video/still is very good. This camera does basic videography very well, and has a host of features to handle difficult light, movement or color situations even better. This camera has come a long way toward being my perfect camera, and is state of the industry in several critical areas. I kept it, use it, and recommend it. It has quality features and no weaknesses. I notice the Canon HFR 10 (the middle camera in this series) with 8G memory built in, is now selling for only $20 more. It may be a better price point. -Happy Hunting- 5/5/2010

Sanyo Xacti CG10 Dual Camera HD Flash Memory Camcorder with 5x Optical Zoom

I picked up one of these locally, intending to replace my MinoHD with it. This camera ended up being a disappointment to me. I really want to like it, but the reality is that the picture quality disappoints compared to the MinoHD.

PROs: LOTS of really nice features

    - Compact pistol-grip design that’s comfortable to hold

    - Large, easy to view 3? LCD screen with rigid plastic screen to protect it

    - Uses SD/SDHC memory cards up to 32GB

    - Stereo audio

    - Standard h.264/AAC codecs compatible with Apple’s iMovie ’09

    - 5X optical zoom, able to change zoom range while recording

    - Focus auto-adjusts while recording (not all cameras do this)

    - Ability to take decent 10MP still shots without having to switch modes

    - Has a flash for still pictures

    - Easy to navigate menu system with customizable shortcuts accessed by the joystick

    - Easy to operate joystick with positive click feedback that doesn’t intrude while recording

    - Manual adjustments (full manual, shutter priority, aperture priority, noise reduction, auto-focus mode, exposure measure mode, etc.)

    - Comes with a lens cap to protect the lens

    - Tally light is on the top of the camera to the rear where the person holding the camera can see it and not where it’s distracting to the person being recorded (VERY important when recording small children)

    - Easily accessible battery compartment / Battery cover is tethered by a plastic tab so it can’t be easily lost

    - Standard tripod mount on the bottom

CONs: Picture quality requires a lot of tweaking in the manual settings to make it decent.

    - Low light performance is poor even for this class of camcorder

    - Electronic stabilization tends to soften the picture, sometimes to the point of making it appear to be out of focus

    - Color saturation results in a visual pleasing picture but inaccurate color reproduction

    - Focus and Exposure reaction seems to be fairly slow as well

    - Proprietary USB/AV port (I hate it when manufacturers eschew standard ports in favor or proprietary solutions. I’d rather have the camera be a little bigger to accommodate a mini-USB port as well as a mini-HDMI)

    - Proprietary HD Component cable NOT included

    - SD slot cover seems a bit flimsy

    - Camera cannot be used as a live camera with Macs, only with Windows PCs

    - Camera draws power from battery when used in card reader mode instead of drawing power from USB

Before I bought this camera, I did a lot of research on it, including viewing uploaded footage from this camera on Vimeo.com. Even though I’ve only had the camera two days, I’ve done a lot of testing with it.

[...] Keep in mind that I’m not saying the MinoHD is the best camera out there, but it is certainly better in my experience overall. I simply compared the CG10 to the MinoHD, because the MinoHD is the incumbent.

I gave the CG10 3 stars because I love all the features that Sanyo put into it, but the picture quality is such a disappointment. One of the major features is the electronic stabilization, and I found it to reduce the picture quality more than it improved it.

I think that a camera’s auto/program settings should produce a good basic picture that serves as the camera’s baseline, and then any manual controls should serve to tailor that picture to your artistic needs or to make a good picture great. The Sanyo’s auto/program settings produce a sub-standard picture that’s soft to the extent that it looks out of focus, it suffers from serious motion blur, and in the end simply looks like widescreen standard definition. The manual settings only serve to make a bad picture look good if you can find the right settings for the shooting conditions. Having said that, I don’t find this camera to be good for capturing those precious surprise moments that young children present us because you can’t expect a good picture by simply pulling it out, turning it on, and starting shooting.

I think Sanyo should spend some more time with improving their stabilization, 9-pt auto-focus, and exposure measuring algorithms. Out of the box, it just doesn’t perform, and the plethora of features simply cannot make up for that.

UPDATE: I still stand by my initial assessment of the VPC-CG10?s picture quality, but after spending quite a bit of time playing with various settings, I believe I have found a good setup which probably should have been Sanyo’s starting point in its auto/program modes.

    1) Turn off the stabilization: While this helps a little bit in extreme tele situations, it actually seems to hurt picture quality otherwise, resulting in a blurry picture that appears out-of-focus. Turning off the stabilization does result in more shake and/or jitter, but the picture is quite a bit clearer. I personally do not believe that there is any decent alternative to optical image stabilization. They could drop this feature from the camera altogether, drop the price a little more, and then I would probably bump this camera up a star even.

    2) Enable Single-Point AutoFocus: The 9-point AF algorithm spends a good deal of time “hunting”, i.e. trying to find a focus point even when the camera is not moving. The single-point AF does a much better job of providing a clear focus. While still providing a softer picture than the MinoHD, it is a vast improvement over the 9-point AF’s performance.

    3) Set Exposure to Aperture-priority with f=3.5: This is the camera’s widest aperture setting and will let in the most light through the lens. It will then adjust the shutter speed as necessary to provide a decently exposed picture. Fine tuning can then be adjusted via the EV adjustment, which can be assigned to one of the joystick shortcut positions.

With the above settings, I have been able to record some footage that I think is close to the MinoHD’s quality, both in bright light and indoor lighting. If they either ditch the electronic stabilization altogether or replace it with optical IS, address the 9-pt AF’s poor focusing algorithm, and either lock the aperture at 3.5 or put in a faster lens, Sanyo would have a very impressive camera on their hands.

One distinct advantage that the Xacti has over the MinoHD is its optics. At full wide angle, the Xacti has a much wider field of view than the MinoHD, whose fov is significantly narrower when compared even to its SD sibling, the FlipVideo Ultra.

After using this camera for a couple weeks along with the MinoHD and Sony’s DSC-T900, I have to say that the Xacti VPC-CG10 is probably the best bang for the buck. I’d maybe bump up the rating by another star, but I don’t think any of these pocket HD camcorders really deserve 5. And yes, I kept the Xacti and sent the MinoHD and T900 back.

GoPro’s obsession with sound has conquered the wind. At 85 mph on a motorcycle, you’ll enjoy the throaty sound of your motor, not the wind. Inside even the quietest street cars, hear the pull of your motor…not the drone of the wind and road. Included is a 1100mAh rechargeable lithium-ion battery that lasts for up to 2.5 hours of constant recording. With optional accessories, you can also plug the camera into a wall outlet, cigarette lighter, or with any USB-compatible power adapter, wire it directly to your vehicle’s electrical system. The battery will charge while you record. The camera can also shoot automatic 5MP photos at 2/5/10/30 and 60 second intervals during your drive or ride, hands free. Pre
